Toy

Since the year of 1995, this school year enters into my 28th year of teaching, and continuing my 8th year at Durham Elementary for the 2022-2023 School Year to be teaching Physical Education Prep.  I formerly taught most recently at Forest Park Elementary as a 4th grade teacher for 3 years, before that at Cabrillo Elementary as a 6th Grade Teacher for 4 years, beginning in Fremont Unified as an English and PE teacher for 6 years at Robertson Continuation High School, and before that I previously taught in Oakland Unified for 7 years (5 years as a 6th grade Roosevelt Middle School English/Social Studies Core teacher, 1 year as a Bella Vista Elementary K-1 combination teacher, and 1 year as a substitute teacher).  I have enjoyed working in challenging environments over the years, and have had the luxury of seeing how kids change in the different school settings ranging from elementary, middle, and high school.  I have coached basketball (last couple years at Forest Park, at Oakland's Roosevelt Middle School, and at Fremont's Robertson High School) and varsity tennis (at Mission San Jose High School here in Fremont) in the past as well, which I enjoy playing as well on my spare time.  Now, I just referee elementary and middle school basketball games throughout the school district for the past several years.

I hope to instill a healthy, caring, and challenging environment in Physical Education to help students learn the fitness and/or motor movement activities, along with the skills necessary for games as well.  Keep in mind that these activities will provide physical fitness and movement components that include flexibility, cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular endurance, strength, speed, reaction time, agility, as well as loco-motor and non loco-motor movement.  Please remind your students to wear closed toe athletics shoes and comfortable clothing to participate safely.  There will be no time for changing clothes.  If it is necessary for your child to wear a dress on a PE day, shorts or leggings should be worn under the dress.  Moreover, bring a water bottle to stay hydrated as we should be drinking about half our body weight in ounces of water daily.

If your child can't participate in PE due to a reason which isn't backed up by a note from a doctor or parent, or due to clothing/shoes which are inappropriate or unsafe for participation, he/she will lose points off his/her grade for that day.  I'll need a note from a doctor after the first parent note excuse if the sickness or injury persists for more than a school PE day.  Students may also lose points off their grade due to inappropriate behavior which could cause him/her to lose participation time.  Students can also slowly lower their PE grade and not be allowed to participate in PE activities if not wearing athletic shoes, and thereby be relegated to walking exercise only.  If a student doesn't know how to tie one's shoes still, I'll usually help teach him or her once (maybe twice), but that is considered the parent's responsibility, so please make sure to teach them making sure they practice enough to be able to actually do it.  As a result, untied shoes without being able to tie them also results in a non productive PE day.  Please note that three student inappropriate shoe and/or behavior infractions (infraction notes will be sent home that day) will lower the PE grade automatically to a 2 grade on the report card, whereas six will lower the PE grade to a 1 grade on the report card.
